Abstract

Biomimetics (or biomimicry) is the imitation of models, systems and elements of nature in order to solve complex human problems. One of the first examples of biomimetics was the study of birds to enable human flight. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), whom we discussed in detail in our article "FROM DA VINCI TO SIKORSKY" in previous issues, although he was never successful in creating a "flying machine", was a keen observer of the anatomy and flight of birds and made numerous notes and sketches of his observations as well as sketches of "flying machines". In 1903, the Wright Brothers flew the first heavier-than-air airplane and it is claimed that they were inspired by their observations of pigeons during the flight.
